What opinions do people have about Direct2Drive? How does it compare to Impulse and Steam?

Had an issue where when I ordered a game it placed the order twice, but they refunded me fairly quickly. Don't like the restrictions on use and activation though, so I only tend to use them if they're much cheaper than impulse/steam (which usually they aren't).

I use steam, direct2drive, impulse, and gamersgate.  When you want to buy something it's good to check several places as you can see pretty major prices differences at different times.  They all have their minor advantages/disadvantages but for the most part they all work.  I have no issues getting my games when i want to play them.

Never used'em and with Steam around (achievements, features, community, mature platform) and later Impulse I doubt I ever will.

I've only made one purchase from them (Gothic 3 and Call of the Cthluhu or however you spell it) and I've had no issues with them.

I've had no issues with D2D either, I used that a lot before I switched to Steam and Impulse. The reason I switched away from D2D was that they basically stopped selling anything interesting in Europe, and if they did, at inflated prices. (An issue also with steam and impulse, but not as severe.).

I have to say, though, I like the client based approach of Impulse and Steam a lot more.

To be fair they did integrate everything into Comrade, but Comrade is the worst pile of software I've ever used.

Yeah I dislike comrade.  I mean it checks your comp for all games without asking.  I don't mean it shows games you bought from d2d and that it installed. I mean everything.  Seems a bit invasive.

I don't mind that personally, but that it downloads patches for things because it doesn't realize they're already patched is obnoxious.

I just wish it asked before it started mining for any kind of data on my machine.

I use Gamersgate, Impulse and Steam.

- Gamersgate: I buy my paradox games from it, because Paradox Interactive is heavily connected with Gamersgate and so you will get patches and addons faster than on any other distribution platform

- Impulse: Same as PI/Gamersgate. All my Stardock games are bought on Impulse (or retail), because there is the fastest patch distribution (and no other alternative )

- Steam: Just some small indi games; mostly these games which can't be modded or aren't available elsewhere.

Retail (will die in the next years, but I really like my boxes in my shrine ) > Gamersgate (no DRM or client) > Impulse (client that provides a good patching process) > Steam (client provides DRM...)
